Esther Series | Day 5: Answering the Call
Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”
So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions.
Esther 4:15-17
After hearing Mordecai's challenge, Esther made a decision. She would go before the king on behalf of her people, fully aware that doing so could cost her life. Yet before she took a single step toward the palace, she first turned toward God.
Her first response was not strategy.
It was surrender.
Esther instructed Mordecai to gather all the Jews in Susa to fast, while she and her attendants fasted alongside them. She understood that the assignment before her could not be accomplished in her own wisdom, influence, or strength. If God did not move, neither could she.
Ezra demonstrated this same posture when he prepared to lead God's people on a dangerous journey. Rather than relying on military protection or human resources, he proclaimed a fast so the people could humble themselves before God and seek His guidance. Scripture tells us, "So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He answered our prayer."
Both Esther and Ezra remind us that surrender comes before strength.
Answering God's call is not simply about saying yes. It is about recognizing our dependence on the One who called us.
Sometimes surrender looks like pushing away the plate so we can quiet the distractions around us and hear God's voice more clearly.
Other times surrender looks like laying down our own expectations, our timeline, or our desire to control the outcome so we can embrace what God has intended instead.
Esther's declaration, "If I perish, I perish," was not a statement of hopelessness. It was a declaration of trust. She chose obedience even when the outcome was uncertain because she believed the God who had positioned her was worthy of her surrender.
There will be moments when God's calling asks us to lay something down. It may be comfort, security, approval, control, or even our own plans.
The call of God will often cost us something.
Yet every act of surrender is an opportunity to declare that we trust His will more than our own.
Answering the call has never been about having enough strength.
It has always been about surrendering to the One who does.

Is there an area of my life where God is asking me to surrender before He asks me to move?
What am I holding onto that may be making it difficult to fully trust God's direction?
How can I intentionally create space to seek God before making my next decision or taking my next step?
Grace Challenge
This week, practice surrender before action.
Spend intentional time seeking God before making a decision you've been carrying. Whether that looks like fasting from a meal, setting aside time for prayer, or laying down an expectation you've been holding onto, ask the Lord to align your heart with His before asking Him to bless your plans.
Remember, surrender isn't about giving something up for the sake of sacrifice. It's about making room for God to lead.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that I was never meant to fulfill Your calling in my own strength. Thank You for inviting me to depend on You rather than relying on my own understanding.
Teach me what true surrender looks like. Give me the humility to seek You before I act, the faith to trust You when the outcome is uncertain, and the courage to obey even when obedience requires me to lay down my comfort, my expectations, or my plans.
Like Esther, may I recognize that every assignment You give is an invitation to trust You more deeply. Help me to remember that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness, and that You are faithful to equip those who surrender themselves to Your will.
May my first response always be to seek Your presence before pursuing Your purpose.
