Esther Series | Day 7: The Authority of the King

Esther 7 and 8 mark a turning point in the story.
The same gallows Haman built for Mordecai became the instrument of his own downfall. The authority he once used to oppress others came to an end, and on that very day, everything began to change.
King Xerxes gave Esther Haman's estate, and Mordecai was entrusted with the king's signet ring. What had once belonged to the enemy was now placed into the hands of those who were committed to protecting God's people.
However, there was the problem that the first decree could not be revoked.
According to the law of the Medes and Persians, anything written in the king's name and sealed with his signet ring was irrevocable. Esther and Mordecai could not erase what had already been written.
Instead, the king gave them authority to write a new decree in his name.
The new decree carried weight because it bore the king's name.
This reminded me of Jesus' words in John 14:14. As believers, we approach the Father in the name of Jesus, not because of our own merit, but because of His authority. It also echoes Luke 10:19, where Jesus entrusts His followers with authority over the power of the enemy. Our confidence is not rooted in ourselves. It is rooted in the One who has commissioned us.
Esther and Mordecai did not invent their own authority. They simply exercised the authority that had been entrusted to them.
The same is true for us.
There are seasons when we face circumstances that cannot simply be erased. Some situations cannot be undone overnight. Some consequences cannot be reversed with a single prayer.
Yet even in those moments, God has not left us powerless.
Like Esther and Mordecai, we have been invited to respond from a place of delegated authority rather than personal strength. We pray in the name of Jesus. We walk in obedience under His leadership. We resist fear because our confidence is anchored in the authority of the King.
One observation I continue to return to is this: the king's name is what gave the decree its authority.
Likewise, our prayers, our obedience, and our confidence carry power not because of who we are, but because of the authority given to us through Christ.
The authority of the King changes everything.

Where have I been relying on my own strength instead of the authority Christ has given me?
How does remembering whose name I carry change the way I approach difficult situations?
What would it look like to pray, speak, and act with greater confidence in the authority of Jesus rather than my own ability?
Grace Challenge
This week, identify one situation that has left you feeling powerless.
Instead of focusing on your limitations, spend time praying through John 14:14 and Luke 10:19. Ask God to help you shift your perspective from what you cannot do to what He is able to accomplish through His authority.
As you pray, remind yourself that your confidence is not found in your own name. It is found in the name of Jesus.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that I never stand alone or in my own strength. Thank You for giving me the privilege of belonging to You and living under the authority of, Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Help me to remember that my confidence is not found in my abilities, my influence, or my understanding. It is found in the name of Jesus.
Teach me to walk in humble confidence, trusting that You have equipped me for every assignment You have placed before me. When I feel weak, remind me that Your authority is greater than my limitations. When I feel uncertain, help me rest in the truth that You are still sovereign over every circumstance.
May my words, my prayers, and my life reflect the authority of the King I serve. Give me wisdom to use that authority with humility, faith, and love as I seek to honor You.
