Ruth Series | Day 1: Leaving What's Familiar

"But Ruth replied, 'Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.'"

Devotional
When we think of Ruth we picture a story of redemption, restoration, and God's provision. Yet before any of that could unfold, Ruth had to make a decision.
She had to leave what was familiar and go into the unknown.
Ruth left behind her homeland, her culture, and the only life she had ever known. There were no promises awaiting her in Bethlehem. There was no guarantee that life would be easier, or any assurance that everything would work out the way she hoped.
There was only an invitation to trust.
Her words to Naomi reveal more than loyalty. They also reveal surrender. Ruth wasn't simply choosing to stay with her mother-in-law. She was choosing the God Naomi served. She exchanged what was familiar for a future she could not yet see.
Hebrews 11 reminds us that Abraham walked a similar path. God called him to go, and Abraham obeyed without knowing the destination. His confidence was never in having all the answers. His confidence was in the One who did.
The same is true for us.
We often ask God to reveal the entire plan before we're willing to take the first step. We want certainty before obedience. We want clarity before commitment. Yet Scripture reminds us that faith rarely begins with all the details. More often, it begins with a simple "yes."
Sometimes what God asks us to leave isn't a place at all.
It may be an old mindset that no longer serves us. A fear that has kept us stuck. A version of ourselves we've outgrown. The need to control every outcome. The comfort of what is predictable.
Leaving what is familiar can feel unsettling. Yet every step of obedience creates room for God to do something new. Ruth couldn't see the redemption waiting for her in Bethlehem, but God could. Abraham couldn't see the inheritance God had prepared, but God already knew the destination.
He is the same God.
If He is inviting you to take a step of faith, you can trust that His presence will meet you long before you arrive at the destination.

What is one familiar thing you sense God may be asking you to release so you can follow Him more freely?
Grace Challenge
Take one intentional step of obedience today. Whether it's letting go of fear, saying yes to an opportunity, extending forgiveness, or trusting God with an unanswered prayer, choose faith over familiarity.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me into a life of faith. When the unknown feels overwhelming, remind me that I never walk alone. Give me the courage to release what is familiar so I can embrace what You have prepared. Help me trust Your heart, even when I cannot see the whole path.
Like Ruth, may my life reflect a willingness to follow wherever You lead. Like Abraham, may I obey with confidence, knowing that the One who calls me is always faithful.
