What We Choose to Carry

Proverbs 31:14

She is like a merchant ship, bringing her food from afar.

There’s something about this image that keeps drawing me in.

A merchant ship doesn’t move without direction.

It doesn’t just take what’s closest or most convenient. It goes after what is needed, what is valuable, what has been chosen with intention.

And I can’t help but see discernment in that.

Intentionality too.

Not just in what she gathers… but in what she allows herself to carry.

Because not everything that is available is meant to be received.

And not everything that is easy is meant to be held onto.

A Life Aligned

This kind of discernment doesn’t come from overthinking everything.

It comes from alignment.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

— Matthew 6:33

There is an order to her life.

She is not led by urgency, pressure, or what’s within reach.

She is led by what is aligned.

Seeking God first shapes what she says yes to.

It filters what she allows in.

It keeps her from carrying things that were never meant for her.

A Life That Trusts Its Source

If we’re honest, discernment can feel risky.

Choosing carefully can feel like missing out.

Letting go can feel like lack.

But she doesn’t live from that place.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

— Philippians 4:19

She trusts her source.

So she doesn’t have to grasp at everything.

She doesn’t have to hold onto what isn’t aligned out of fear that nothing else will come.

She can move with intention—

because she believes what she needs will meet her where she is aligned.

A Life That Doesn’t Walk Alone

And then there’s the part that shifts the focus from what she carries to who she walks with.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up

—  Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

That matters.

Because life isn’t just about what we’re building…

it’s also about who is beside us while we build it.

There is wisdom in not carrying everything alone.

But there is also wisdom in being discerning about who is close enough to help carry it.

Not everyone is meant to walk with you in every season.

Not every connection is meant to support what God is forming in your life.

And that’s not harsh… it’s honest.

Because the right people don’t just stand near you,

they also strengthen what God is building through you.

What She Carries

When I come back to the image of the merchant ship,

I don’t just see movement. I also see intention.

She is discerning about what she receives.

And she is intentional about what she carries.

Her life isn’t built on convenience.

It’s shaped by alignment, trust, and wise connection.

And maybe that’s the invitation here

not to overcomplicate everything,

but to slow down enough to choose well.

Reflection

What have you been allowing into your life lately (on purpose or by default?)

Where do you feel the need to slow down and choose more intentionally right now?

Who or what is currently influencing the direction of your life the most?

Challenge

This week, take a quiet moment to notice what you’re carrying emotionally, spiritually, and relationally.

Ask yourself:

Did I choose this with discernment, or did it just become part of my life over time?

Then gently make one adjustment—

release something that no longer aligns, or give more intentional space to what does.
